Social Media for Teaching & Learning, 18th January 2012 > Social Media for Teaching & Learning, 18th January 2012

A collaborative venture between the JISC RSC South West, West Midlands and South East. Live in all 3 venues linked by video conference

Social Media are proliferating at an incredible rate, and increasingly students and educators expect to be able to utilise these for Teaching and Learning. Social Networks are probably the most preeminent Social Media of the age, with Facebook alone claiming 800 active million users and a staggering 900 million objects that users can interact with. You Tube ranks as the third most visited web site, with market share of 43% and 14 billion videos viewed per month. Yet very often Educational Professionals and not fully availed of the pedagocic implications and possibilities of these technologies, and are concurrently frequently misinformed about the potential risks and oportunities of utilising these conduits.

This event, presented jointly by three JISC Regional Support Centres, hopes to provide you with the opportunity to hear first hand about good practice in the UK's post-compulsory education sectors, with presentations from expert users and innovators on the ground, who've accrued direct experience of using these tools at the "chalk face". We have also been very fortunate in securing a keynote address, via video conference from the US, from Linda Fogg Phillips. Linda was commissioned by Facebook to write "Facebook for Educators" and, along with her colleagues is a globally recognised authority (http://facebookforeducators.org/)
