Introduction

Many learning providers in the region use Moodle as their virtual learning environment (VLE) but how does one measure the impact of Moodle on the learner’s experience? A good place to start would be to evaluate how much Moodle is actually being used.

This wiki page holds all of the information relating to the use of Moodle Stats and supports the Moodle Stats webinar, an online session being run to demonstrate the features of the software.

Moodle Stats Software

Moodle maintains logs of all its activity, and if its statistics are enabled, reports on activity can be produced. However, these statistics are somewhat limited, and not very user-friendly. In the last year, the RSC West Midlands worked with a number of learning providers to develop Moodle Stats - a Microsoft Access application that analyses the Moodle log to produce reports and charts on activity over a user-specified date range.

The advantages of Moodle Stats over Moodle’s built-in statistics reports are:

  • Users do not need to log into Moodle in order to run activity reports
  • There is more flexibility in selection of date range on which to report
  • There are more report options
  • Charts and reports can be exported to Word, Excel or Adobe format

A CD containing the Moodle Stats application and supporting documentation is being made available to learning providers in the region by the RSC West Midlands. To request a CD, fill out and submit this online form.

Learning providers are free to customise their copy of Moodle Stats as they wish. The RSC West Midlands will not provide ongoing support.
