The potential of Virtual Worlds in Education, looking specifically at Second Life
In this session, Jane will give an overview of virtual worlds, focusing on Second Life ™. There will be examples of how it is being used in an educational capacity and some discussion on its potential. We shall go in world for a demonstration, spaces will be visited and we shall have conversations with people using Second Life.
Most of this session will be a demonstration of Second Life and so there are no materials for the actual session. However, there are many useful resources on this wiki already, for example:Introduction to Second Life, and this webquest created as an introduction to SL
Also, to give you some points to consider about choosing a virtual world, see John Kirriemuir's document created for the recent JISC Online Conference Click here for the pdf
"From input to this and previous snapshots, plus background research, institutional website searches and anecdotes, it is evident that every UK university except one (the University of the Highlands and Islands) has members of staff who have developed, or are developing, something in a virtual world – though that ‘something’, and the use and educational relevance of it, varies extremely widely." Derrin Kent TDM - Harnessing the Cloud. Integrating Web2.0 applications to enhance an existing learning platform
Speaking from a WBL practitioner's perspective, Derrin will be talking about how TDM have integrated Google Apps, Facebook, Delicious, LinkedIn, Slideshare and other cloud-based technologies with their own managed Moodle, Mahara and Joomla sites. There are some hard-nosed business decisions to be made here and Derrin will, therefore, be comparing and contrasting: Cloud versus Local Servers and closed source software options versus open source (a decision equally as important in the cloud as it is for your local server set up or for your local desktop software).

Kevin Brace RSC WM - The potential of Web2.0
In this session you will learn about some of the more commonly use web applications used in education and commerce, e.g. blogs, wikis, social bookmarking. A selection of these applications will be demonstrated - as well as discovering some of the more esoteric “mash-ups”, and less well known web tools that are reshaping 21st century approaches to communication and collaboration. Unsurprisingly I used an online (web 2.0) mindmap tool for this, please access the Web 2.0 presentation on line.
Alison Wootton RSC WM – Accessibility and Inclusion in the West Midlands
This session will look at what has been happening in the West Midlands area with Accessibility. This will be a an overview of the ACCESS Apps projects and how Access Apps software has helped learners to become independent There will be a short demo of the EDU Apps / Access Apps Software.
