Introduction

In recent years, e-learning has played an increasingly important role in Ofsted inspections, with teaching staff required to demonstrate that they have embedded technology into teaching and learning. From the learners perspective, they are increasingly used to having a range of technologies and tools at their disposal that meet their needs in the digital age.

The phrase 'e-maturity' is often used to describe how far a learning provider has progressed with incorporating technology into teaching and learning. Yet how can a learning provider measure to what extent they have embedded technology? Thankfully, there are a range of tools available to help, ranging from entirely self asessment options, to those carried out in conjunction with your local Regional Support Centre (RSC).

Self Assessment Options

There are three self assessment e-learning progress review tools to choose from depending on your organisation's needs and the level of information required. These tools enable key members in your organisation to reflect and self evaluate e-learning progress.

  • Generator - an online review tool developed by Becta and the RSCs. It is for LSC funded work-based learning providers, FE colleges and Adult and Community Learning providers. Generator is carried out independently by your organisation with the option to complete a 'Quick Review' (a snapshot of your current position), or a more detailed 'full review.'
  • e-learning Positioning Statement (eLPS) - a questionnaire review tool developed by NIACE, in partnership with Becta and the Centre for Excellence (CEL). It is specifically for Adult and Community Learning providers and provides an indication of current e-learning position under five main themes, through a tick box approach, ranging from 'not yet started' to 'embedded.'
  • Work-based Learning e-Learning Positioning Statement - a questionnaire review tool for work-based learning providers. Developed by RSC UK in collaboration with CEL and NIACE, the tool comprises 32 elements under seven themes. For each element users can indicate the current position using check boxes ranging from 'not yet started' to 'embedded.' Providers can also provide supplementary supporting evidence.

RSC Review Options

Alternatively, the RSC can carry out a review which involves a visit to your organisation:

  • e-Progress Review - an initial visit by a member of the RSC team and an internal self assessment using an online survey. The survey is delivered in consultation with key staff from your organisation and a member of the senior management team. This leads to the creation of an e-progress 'profile' and a follow up meeting facilitated by the RSC.
  • e-Learning Health Check - conducted by members of the RSC team through an initial online survey and a day visit to your organisation (including a series of 30-minute meetings with key staff and students). This is followed up by a written report and action plan to support e-learning strategy development.
