ACL Initiative Project


Introduction

In July 2008, the Adult & Community Learning services of the West Midlands Local Authorities were invited to submit a proposal for a small project. In return each organisation would be given two Asus Eee pcs and a Canon Powershot digital camera for them to use in their teaching - in whatever way they chose. Once the proposals had been received and accepted, the project leaders were invited to collect their equipment and attend some training on the kit.


Summary of Project Proposals

Birmingham City Council ILT Coordinator will use for generic induction sessions – for groups and individuals at mains sites and outreach venues.
Coventry City Council Two tutors to use for capturing evidence for NVQs. Assessment is in the workplace and this kit will make it more accessible for learners.(Business Admin, CCLD , Health and Social Care)
Dudley Metropolitan Borough Council Skills for Life classes can use Learning progs on Eee pcs or connect to projector to present materials from the internet. Camera to be used with RARPA – for evidence entry level NOCN qualification.
Herefordshire County Council Wider Family Learning, FLLN and non-ICT PCDL . In wireless enabled Community Access Points. Use for RARPA.
Sandwell Metropolitan Borough Council Employability Award courses with emphasis on hard-to-reach learners – most deprived wards. 5 min presentation using video and photos. Can use in small groups in community venues. Use for RARPA.
Shropshire County Council To increase benefits of technology by bringing technology to the people. Computers for beginners/internet and email; Digital Photography basics and better techniques course. Family history.
Solihull Metropolitan Borough Council Family Learning eg FLLN and Wider Family Learning for Parent and/or child involvement with progression to further ICT learning opportunities.
Staffordshire County Council Video blog to create information, advice and guidance to ACL tutors – IT tutors in first inst. Taster session on stop frame animation – to assess feasibility of such courses.
Stoke-on-Trent City Council Widening Participation – Open College used. Evidence required for assessment, tutors to use kit to take photos of individual and group assignments etc.
Walsall Metropolitan Borough Council To be used with MFL and ESOL. Using cameras to take photos of each other and finding out facts – weekly activity. Can be used as evidence of progress.
Warwickshire County Council Visual Arts courses – use the camera to provide a record of artefacts created by learners and the Eee pcs to learners’ comments, providing a record for RARPA purposes. Essential skills courses: literacy and ESOL learners will make photographs which will then act as a stimulus for oral or written work, captured via the Eee pc. Used in conjunction with wireless network, to provide internet access.
Wolverhampton City Council To be used in teacher training – C&G 7303/4. For teachers wishing to develop their ICT skills which can help with their IfL minimum core competencies.
Worcestershire County Council Family Learning, ICTogether Programme. Kit loaned to parents and children, compiling a digital log of the use, increasing skills, families learning together, parents supporting children and additional module on the programme.

Outcomes

The projects were to run for around 4 months with a brief report being submitted by the end of January 2009. Most projects finished on time and overall, the experience seems to have been positive. Their reports can be downloaded here:
